Changing ram seals
« on: June 25, 2007, 03:05:17 PM »
Just after some advice on the best way to do this.

Where's the best place to start on something like this?

I imagine 4 axle stands would be a good idea...  but which hose do I take off first?

Removing the rams and using a vice to remove the screwed sleave and replacing the seals shouldn't be too difficult for me...  but just not sure how to get to that point.

Thanks in advance!

Most important is to make sure the system isn't under pressure. The way I used to do it was to lift the car, jack extra if necessary, axle stands, then jack under each wheel on trailing arm whilst dumping that corner. Then undo hose-ram fitting and remove ram.

Oh I see... jack up the wheel while dumping... so there's less fluid in that hose and then unscrew it from the ram (praying the fluid doesn't soak you!) and Bob's your uncle!!

Ok, cool... thanks mate!

yup cos once you've dumped the car (very important unless you fancy having a jet of hydro oil squirting at you at 8000psi) you can't get a jack under...

stripping/assembly is straight forward.

keep everything CLEAN.

Liberally apply oil to the seals before refitting.

after "rehosing" top up the tank and go through the same palava you did when you ran low.

Okay... just had the front ram off, that was leaking the most... and it looks like just the collar was loose...  but I thought I'd take it all apart and go for replacing the seals anyway.

It's exactly the same as this pic below, apart from the colour.

But here is a pic of my seals from my ram...
The seal nearest the top appears to have a seal inside it...
and the other lower one appears damaged anyway... so I'm glad I did carry on disassembling them anyway.

So, where's the easiest place to get these?

go to your local hydraulic shop, seals and rings in hand and exclaim to the gentleman behind the counter:

"hello my good man, my name is (insert name) and i would like 8 of these rubber seals please. Also, i would like you to furnish me with 8 of these rings - please be hasty in your pursuits dear sir, as my need is great"

the one"with a seal inside it" is a "lip seal"
it will wok with just 2 o rings and back up rings but a lip seal on the top groove is best

Ok, just took the rears off too...

Looks like the o-rings and 'lip seals' are the same as the fronts, so I'll just pop to SealMasters on Monday when I'm off with the ones from the front ram I took off.  (Thanks to BBC and Fatdaddy for your help)

Both rear collars weren't even hand tight, so I'm thinking I shouldn't 'chip' anymore and check them more often... as this is the first time I've looked properly.

Rear rams.

Close up, seal on the lower left looks well rough.

Plus, this was at the end of my street today, so had to take a pic!

Thanks for the help, guys...

She's all ready and poppin' without leaks...  the ride even feels better too...

Just have to sort out a leak on one ram, where I think the hose joint needs tightening...   and sort the brakes for the MOT... and I'm laughing...
