As for shipping my last ride i shipped in a container (£900) but next time i'd stick to the "Roll on Roll off" where the vehicle is parked on the covered deck along with upto hundreds of others, the shipper does a damage inspection beforehand anyway so they're very carefull
The way it works is:
Cost of vehicle + Shipping + Customs & Excise duty then VAT on the lot,i can't remember offhand the Duty,it's a percentge,i'll look it up,they upped it for "classic cars" (pre-72) so the dearer the vehicle the more Duty/Tax (as a rule of thumb most stuff in $ works out the same in £ give or take)but stuff is way cheap and you can get a lot for your money in Modifications and man hours and have something that's different and parts are easy and plentifull over here
One thing i will say is that if you give a deposit you can sometimes leave the balance with the shipping agent along with a report on the vehicle, then when it's delivered to the port,if it's as described then have the money handed over
Hope this helps,i'll get more details and work out the total cost of something at say $10,000 or so,unless someone does it first
