Thanks Perm.  Bone seems to take quite a shine to Benz's, and has been trying to persuade me to get one for months!

Looking up the model numbers...W123s are early 80s (and late 70s I assume).  A lot of the ones on eBay are looking pretty rotten :(

Are there any other options, apart from Mercs?

123's are a fine car but youve got to spend way more than 'banger' money to get a good solid honest one now. i say 80% are now in a condition not worth spending money on, its not just sills, rear inner wings, outer floors e.t.c that have taken the toll of our climate, most will need replacement of fuel, brake lines, various rubber bushes and perished driveshaft boots are a subject i dont want to talk about  :lol: mine was one owner, dry stored for many years, has full history, and cost me just over 2 grand as i didnt want to be welding and nursing a tired one. very tidy 190's can be bought for little money and rust protection was much better and service/ mechanical parts can be very cheap. but the suspension is a bit tricky to juice. id say go with a golf....... 8)

As damn cool as they are, I'm not really up for having to do a full/partial resto just to get one working :( Would rather buy a working car I can fiddle about with fitting the hydros

If you're looking for alternatives to mercs then (although it would clash with mine) Volvo 240's are amazingly cheap, usually very VERY solid, they last forever due to legendary old volvo build quality, and they're not too difficult to juice (true, they don't have the same 'cool' factor as a benz, but I like mine!), plus insurance shouldn't be too bad with 2 years NCB, and if you ever hit anything, there won't be any evidence of another car ever existing, and there certainly won't be any damage to the volvo (in fact, I doubt you'll even notice a collision! haha!). I bought mine for £150 to put the old Lo-Vol's hydraulics in, it had 75k miles and was rock solid (paint was a bit scratched, but that's about it) Hope this helps! :D

I don't dislike Volvos (wouldn't mind an 850 T5 at all!) but I'm really not sure about the 240.  It's maybe the wrong side of fugly, IMO!

I got a quote of under £700 on a stock Merc 300SE...though not tried one with mods or anything yet  :?

You got any pics of your 240?

What is it about Volvos that makes them easy to juice?

I've been trawling eBay for the past week or 2 and can't find anything that catches my eye :(

The rear is dead easy, just trailing arms (rams bolted to shock mounts and then onto brackets on the arms), the fronts are struts though, which are a little bit of a pain apparently (involves cutting the struts and then weldin the ram on top, I think), but Derrie at Max Hydraulics may be able to help with them... :)
