Cheap cars to juice
« on: May 18, 2007, 10:50:44 AM »
Hey...I used to post on Eurolow a bit, so dropped by here now it's dead :)

I graduate from uni in a few weeks, and wouldn't mind having a ride with juice!

What kinda stuff should I be looking at?  I liked the idea of having a Mk3 Golf, but I'm told struts make everything harder...

Not really bothered about hatch/saloon/estate

Ideally I'd like something cheap that can be used daily...however much I'd love a Benz, I'm not sure that would work out!

Thanks

struts do complicate the fitting and limit the "performance" of juice
BUT
if you are after a juiced car on a budget the the system performance is not priority cos it will be limited by the £'s input anyway.

as you have gathered by the sound of it MB is about the easiest/cheapest to juice in terms of what you get for your money at the end of the day, also not dear to but [especially if you use the services of our own B.P. motors  8)  ]  but maybe not that cheap to run as a student.

if you like the golf anyway, go with one. Get a basic one or two pump system with accumulators fitted, running 24 volts. make sure you have 4 corner control [even if you only intend to have front and back moves] so you have good handling.
You'll have a good entry to our scene, a reliable ride with loads of easy to get custom parts around, cheap running and LOTS OF FUN.  :)

Thanks for that :)

I'm tempted by a mate selling a 2 pump kit with solenoids, dumps and hoses.  Guess I'd need accumulators, batts (no problem), switches (doesn't seem too complex) and rams...rams are where I'm stuck the most.

Roughly what kind of money would I be looking at for rams to work with struts?  Also, what's the deal with mounting them? (do they need custom top plates, or something)

switches and accs no problem either.

Max Hydraulics can supply you struts converted ready to bolt on using your care and top plates. same for the rear.

* sticks hand up as student owner of 48v juiced 280 merc....

If you want it mate, then you'll do whats neccesary to get it.
You have to weigh up pros and cons- 123 merc; good solid car with legendary build quality, can be a bit thirsty (but not that bad...go on jeff, you know you wanna say something about my economy ;) ) compared to mk3 golf (which I incidentaly would love to bag) can be ropey, rust in usual VW places, terrible body roll due to being the car equivalent of a fat girl on a bean bag, but thankfully seems to have escaped the VW scene tax bollocks. Horses for courses.

Hmm...you make a good case!

I guess I've got about £1k for the car, though it would be nice if insurance was cheap (I'm 21 with 2yrs NCB...so got a bit of scope)

What age are 123 Mercs?  I've been poking around on eBay looking a few Benz's...

I know people say they don't break, but is it not damn expensive if they do?  I'm not adverse to checking out my local scrappie, but I can't recall ever seeing a Benz at any of them!

Indeed Monsignor F.Daddy. I am no longer a student..sadly..til I do a PhD...
Fat girls and bean bags are but a phonecall away ;)
Rob, with £1k you should pick up a clean 123. for what its worth bollocks to practicality, go for a 280 and enjoy that straight 6 sound. There are plenty out there, avoid taxis, gypo wagons, and look for an elderly owner car in your local free-ads, but be quick, cos they think they aren't worth owt...

There's a missive range of sub £1k cars out there! Nothing cooler than spending £3k on suspension on a sub £1k car    Even better ... spend £3k an suspension, £1k+on audio, and nearly £1k on rims ... all on a sub £1k car. Makes Tim happy that does!!!  :D
