Full frame 'wrap' details please
« on: January 06, 2007, 01:38:00 PM »
Hi guys

The Impala's chassis needs a full wrap. Colin's welder @ Kustom Kolors is going to do it but I want to thoroughly do my homework before we start. I know the basics like using 1/4 inch sheet and I want to go over-kill by plating all four sides of the box. Does anyone have any other tech details or could point me to useful websites or tech books?

I've posted this thread on layitlow so hopefully I'll be able to get the right on  swtuff like whether to remove body mounts and any other tricks to stop cracking/beautifully painted rear quarters bending in 12 months!  :?

Layitlow is probably your best bet.

steve and the guys have done awesome jobs on their g-body chassis' and will no doubt be of much help for the basics. but maybe with the impala chassis, some yanks will have some more tips and little hints that are specific to your car.

make sure col wraps it right to the back as him and markie did my regal and thats the reason i'm having to do a new chasis.

dont want kinked quarters after all that work now....

i have cleaned up my frame - make sure to grind down old welds and go back over them to make sure they're sweet. i've just finished doing my templates and have ordered in two sheets of 8ft x 4ft 6mm steel.

then i'm going to plasma out the steel templates - tack them onto the frame with a tack weld every 6inchs and hammering the pattern into shape. then go back over and do a nice clean weld....though i'm doing the welding so it might not be that pretty...

ask stevie and teamrod as them boys are nutters - also little ali is just wrapping his frame too and although young he fucking knows shit loads of good stuff

this may be old news to all you experienced builders but there is an excellent  LRM/HP books publication "the Lowriders Handbook" chapter 3 is devoted to wrapping a sixties G.M. X frame - `63 Impala actually- loads of pics and tips its been around for a couple of years, you can get it thru Amazon.

Thanks a lot guys - I really appreciate this. You can see that the Lay It Low forums seem to yield some helpful people. I guess I just want to make sure the car is overkill in the strength department so even if I decide to go mental once in a while, I know that body won't ripple like a ball sack in the cold sea.

Bigcad - I was going to get the Lowrider handbook but I think it's pretty old now, so the game has moved on. I know chassis reinforcement seems to be improving all the time. Saying that, the book does have my fave lowrider ever on the cover so I might treat myself....

That blueprint of the frame looks awesome - thanks!

How's everyone else's projects? I really hope I can get the Impala out this season. It's such a big commitment and such a lot of work and £££ but I can't wait to see it through.

Quote from: "little_gray"
make sure col wraps it right to the back as him and markie did my regal and thats the reason i'm having to do a new chasis.

Col had no involvement in wrapping the Regal's chassis, he'd already left the bodyshop he was working at with Markie and had moved on to pastures new.

He did, however, plate the chassis on his own Caddy, which has seen years of 'abuse' without any problems...

Just thought that needed mentioning.  8)
