Pro hopper call them "Pro Balls"
Black Magic call them "Magic Balls"
CCE call them "Swivel Ball Cups"

Not much help  ::)

They are available in the plant world but unsure of what they are called and will require modding to fit i expect.

they are designed to take loads the other way from power balls
ie with a power ball you push on the hole those are meant fpr pushing/pulling  at 90 deg to that.
those other ones I showed are the right type of thing but they aren't meant for taking the pulling loads that a miss timed switch would create. They'd be fine with pushing loads but i guess we'd need to weld something around/over the hole for pulling loads

I was typing some thing similar when you posted that ::)
Have a look at these http://mcgillmotorsports.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=294 and see what you think.  They'd still need something on top for the pulling loads but they might be useable? I've bought loads of rose joints from McGill in the past, the service and quality is fine. :)

wont work as is quite, but should be applicable

That's the best I can cone up with.
Mods would need to be a couple of C shape bits to weld/bolt around the top of the ball and the stub bit of the ball taping something like 1/2" unf to suit the end of your cyl rod.

by the time you've done that not sure if a box of some shipped from US would be as cheap ?

right, im sick of looking for powerballs, im gonna order them first ones you posted Iain, i'll get osme laser cut C sections made then weld on top.....

but... surely they always under pressure as opposed to pulling, cause there is no pull? as down (or opposing action) is gravity...?? anyway, i'll them and see what happens!!!
