Heya,
Thought i'd better introduce myself a lil here..Name's Jay,
I've been building cars for around 17yrs, from full out custom bugs n splitty crewcabs to model T's and 50s yanks, so i'm not exactly new to all of this car stuff.
Altho the hydro and bagger scene is something i have been around and always admired, i've never gotten around to building the minitruck i envisaged hella yrs back...When i went to live in SF, i was surrounded by slammed trucks and sleds, and it just fuelled my desire, but as is often the case, too many projects too little time.

Anyhoo, that was a while back now, and i'm back in the UK..
Been looking for a B series Mazda or frickin ages, and theyre either screwed or damn expensive.. So i'm kinda settled on a early to mid 90's Mitsubishi L200 single cab.

I have a 350 pontiac and th400 trans that will eventually reside in it, so i can get shot of the nasty ass diesel that is currently in it....Trying to get hold of a stronger rear axle assembly to take the extra power, altho, this is primarily gonna be a cruisin truck, with little or no use at the strip, do you think i might get away with the L200 rear or defo change it out?? I've heard the Mitsub rears are quite dependable and strong, because if i dont need to swap it out thats a plus.
I wanna bag it, with FBSS, poss go all independant..but essentially i wanna lay the rails when its dumped.
Anyone on here had much experience on the minitruck side of things? Iain??
Is it gonna be necessary to notch/kick up the rails?? Will flipping the rear axle on top of the Leafsprings help get it that extra lil bit lower??


Is there anyone in the Worcestershire/birmingham area that fits bags, being as Maxhydr is long gone.. as i was originally gonna go see iain bout getting it hooked up.

your on your own now [far as proffesionals go] on this side of UK.
Ray [rayvern] has done loads of mini trucks as i'm sure you know but i guess this will be a home grown project anyway  8)

plenty of good air [or hydro] advice on here from all levels so ask away. Dont think anyone will have specific mitsu experience tho. My guess would be that the rear of a diesel hauler would be up a 350 as a road ride. Most minis I have seen have needed kick ups and no inner arches to lay frame.

I dont have many pics left of the bugs etc these days, but here's one i just found, this was the last bug built around 93 before the whole resto cal thing kicked off,  Black car with green flake overlay and pearl lacquer,2100cc gene berg lump and 5 speed trans,Pro heads, Nos Fogger kit,twin 50mm carbs by JC in the USA, suicide doors, the usual shaving etc,homebrewed brembo disc conversion on 4 corners, 5000w ice, Green n black leather sculpted interior,rims where OEM 356c that were modded, later swapped out to original BRMs, plus it had a bunch of acc's like the wooden roofrack,and ski rac, cooler boxes and all that biz....When that finaly went, i rebuilt a 62 crewcab that my old friend Jon abbott from JAVA bought back from cali for me...That was at shows from around 96> Black lower and cream top, on original empi 5's, 1776cc motor, with irs trans conversion, i hate reduction box rears....Oddly enough it was fitted with a Full length factory rag top?!?!?! and every VW commercial tool/acc's known to man..
I ran a club called Working Class VWs for yrs, that was aimed at the commercial owners specifically, as parts etc were scarce at the time..
Then it was time to move on to new things, and i started rodding and building kustom bikes etc...To be honest the VW scene became real anal,and i couldnt be arsed with all the bitchin,and attitude..

Cheers for the info, I figured i'd have a hard time tryin to find somewhere to do an installation, so decide to hit you folks up to get the low down so to speak..

Kicking the frame shouldnt be too much hassle,  as for the lack of inner arches, i was gonna fabricate some larger tubs for the bed area... on the front are we talking just remove the crappy plastic inner arch liners, or the entire flitch?

One of my more recent rides was this '55 buick roadmaster, it was gonna get juice, but i'd bought a new house recently and it had to go  :cry:

I used to live in Worc when i first owned it,it was originally light blue(duck egg) with a royal blue roof and it was always around in the town centre or outside my tattoo studio in lowesmoor.

And this was the lil truck that i restored for my Ex GF, 1970 austin gpo van..
It was a total wreck when i got it, altho it did run etc and came with a 'dubious' mot.
I was fitted with a mildly tuned marina motor, trans and rear, along with the marina disc conversion, and stainless magna flow exh setup..The body was bare metalled and repaired, then shot with etch primer and 6 coats of Red oxide coloured truck enamel... I rewired it and got everything working as it should..
The only thing that didnt need major surgery was the Chassis, it was like new except for a small piece under the front cross member that had obviously come into contact with a speed bump or 3 during its life, so it was slightly dinged and had 2 1" holes starting to appear, where the paint had been destroyed.
Not eveyones cup of tea i know, but she loved it, and it certainly scared a few of the ricer boys out there.

welcome to forum :).... when i was in cyprus every other car was an early 90's l200, and most of them were double cabs :)
just can't get them over here.

Jus been thinkin bout kickin the frame...I'm gonna laser cut new sections for the rear kick up over the axle..I've spent all afternoon tryin to redesign the susp mounts on the back, and altho they'd work, they'd be Uuuuuuuggggglllly!
For the front, do you think i'd get away with 'pie cuttin' where it already kicks up? then reweld the pie cut and then plate over it with some substantial plate and gusset stylee...maybe triangulate that area of the chassis with an additional k member.

Other than Rayvern i was lookin at airassisted.com as they seem pretty reasonbably priced for some nice kit, anyone got suggestions for the best route for sourcing the stuff i need.. buy a Kit or components?

I had been offered this setup from airbagit.com by a guy in Worcs for 400 beans...

Would it be suffice? i would wanna swap out the tank,compressor and use 1/2" fittings... Thought it might be worth using,and later upgrading it to make it more responsive..or should i just forget it and do some more saving for stuff off rob...
Hmmmmm.... i forgot how frustrating it can doin on a project on a budget..lol.

I believe that airbagit is AIM stuff, just wait a little while and someone else will be along to clarify shortly.  :)
