1989 420 SE - and a quick hi from a Noob.
« on: January 01, 2008, 09:30:14 PM »
Well this is my first foray into the world of hittin switches

My usual automotive nirvana is...well...anything with an engine really. I have two Rover P5's, a couple of vauxhall viva's, a ford capri i'm currently prepping for strip action, a saab 9000, a saab 900 (turning slowly into trackday car) and a focus that was my daily until i picked up my saab 9000 - the focus has now sat mostly unused for a fair while. Just sold my slammed (4 inch drop all round) two tone volvo 240 estate.

Anyhoo on with the reason i'm here - my new pride n joy. It's a 420 SE Benz on air and big ass lorinsers and i love it to bits. There are a couple of issues with it - either a grumbly front cv or a partially seized caliper - and a wrecked  rear nearside hub where one of the wheels was only attached with two bolts - which promptly snapped (still trying to figure out how the hell that happened) so looking for a replacement rear hub so i can get the old beast mobile again.

Anyhoo the important bit - some pics

The rear install - there should be a bigass nitro bottle right at the back of the boot (closest to the camera) - but PO had to take it out due to BOC charges.

The car is pretty neat, but I wanna make it perfek. There are a load of niggly little bits to do on it - the offside front wing I am suspecting is made up of p38 (the line of it against the wheel isn't consistent), the front bumper was just rattle cann'ed to make it bodycoloured - which looks sh1te. There are three or four rust bubbles in a couple of places over the bodywork, and a couple of bits o rust in the rear boot channels. So I will get the local friendly bodyshop place onto it to make it look minty before the shows.

Whilst I get on with sorting out the blue puffs coming out of the exhausts - hoping that's just some worn stem seals. Either way i'll whip the heads off after the retro rides awards and see whats what.

So yeah - thassit. I'll keep the thread updated with any progress.

Will get some better pics, and acshun shots when it's a) mobile b) I get hold of a decent camera and c) I get a nitro bottle for it.

Thanks for the hearty welcome.

Flicking through the paperwork tonight (what can i say - slow night) and saw the last mot, avec advisories - broken numberplate, no biggie - slight wear on front discs, i thought that's what's meant to happen to them - osf airbag rubbing on wheel, oh sh*t.

Think i'm gonna have a poke under there and see what's happenin to it. Why is nothing ever problem free/straightforward?

My luck with this car is non existent, i swear. First a friend runs over a pothole (other people in car verified that he was driving sensibly) and seems to have dislodged an air line (hopefully not split a bag) as the NSR is making a high pressure hissing noise when you hit the switch.

Then i manage to lose the fugging key!

Got a new one from merc, to pick up on monday/tuesday and then will get on with sorting the airbag out. I miss pimping it big

Well got all those problems fixed and it ran fine...for a day

Now either the ignition coil or the ignition module has thrown a wobbly. Hopefully its the coil as i don't have a spare 500-1100 pounds laying about for a module. I swear this car is going to be the end of me.
