Six-Four Impala SS
« on: August 10, 2006, 06:19:45 PM »
Very much work in progress! In the last few months the 64 Impala has been  stripped to a shell, bare metalled, had the body unbolted from the chassis, had a dolly frame welded up to move the body, and sent down to the body shop Kustom Kolors in Christchurch, Dorset.

So far Colin and Justin have welded in the front floor panels and have started straightening the old body damage. The rear quarter had some accident damage so we've decided to replace the entire driver's side rear quarter panel. It's being shipped as I write this.

House of Kolor are supplying the paint, which is going to be a Cocoa metallic brown/bronze base with gold flake, and a pure white roof with gold dust flake. The interior will remain red vinyl.

Engine? Mmm, let's not go there for the moment. It's either 327 on HEI and Holley or a 1995 Corvette LT1.

The car is being built up through Classic American magazine and is nicknamed Beauty 'Pala. I will post pics when I work out how to!

PS: The chassis is still living in Malvern at Max Hydraulics. Iain's doing the full frame 'wrap' and replacing the old bushes/bearings ready for a four pump juice system (probably Pro Hopper).

How's it going Iain?

Thanks Mr Perm. It's been too long. In that time I've been made redundant, set up as self employed, bought a computer and home broadband, buying a house as we speak (plot for double garage) and got a girlfriend. It's been a busy 8 weeks......

Alright boys - thanks for the welcome back. I've missed this place. Is that sad? :P

Tim, the `66 Pontiac is going strong. Been using it all summer as my mate Lewis (who bought my share out) has gone travelling to Oz for a year and asked me to look after it! We've rewired a few bits, serviced it, rebuilt the brakes, welded and painted the inside floor and done loads of other odd jobs. It's nothing short of cool. Everyone respects it.

Distraction

Slight distraction with the '64 project..........I went and bought this:

http://s45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/L ... nvertible/

Needs resto, but she's a genuine 1968 Impala SS convertible ex-big block. Even rarer than a 64 SS. Not sure what to do with her, now that's sat on the drive. Might pull the 350 engine, rebuild it and use in the '64, then sell the rest. On the other hand it would make a mighty rat-low. Allegedly they made less than 2000 SS convertible big blocks in '68. One on Ebay US at the moment for $21,000. Obviously it's mint.....

-------UPDATE-------

I have just dropped the full rear quarter panel to Colin and Justin @ Kustom Kolors in Bournemouth, so that's going on in a week or so. The car has had its underside sand blasted and new floors in. Scuttle stripped, dash out and door shuts and bonnet ready for primer.

In the meantime I've ordered a load of stuff from the USA and got stung for import tax. Bollocks. Will use USAutomotive in future (who got the rear quarter - 8 feet long!).

House of Kolor paint on its way. Before xmas big things should happen....

Iain, any news on the chassis? Need some pics asap if poss. Oh, and I'm on the case ordering the juice. Am off on a job to Miami at the end of October, so might get them then.

Might sell the '68 Impala project without its engine. £1200 takes it.

Just had photos fromn Justin @ Kustom Kolors to show the full rear quarter being stitched on. Scary. But now the '64 has got a new driver's side rear. Lovely.

Meanwhile I've done a swap with a bloke called John Marsh (owns a Vanishing Point challenger R/T, 69 Camaro and 454 big block El Camino) so he's taken away my '68 Impala SS convertible and will keep the car in exchange for craning out the 350 engine and TH350 box and rebuilding them to my spec for the '64 Impala. The engine's getting a full rebuild and, if I can afford it, might get alloy heads.

In the next few weeks the Impala shell will gradually be getting to the primer stage. Sand blasted gutters and under pans, POR15 the floors and boot, dash out (it had the remains of a termite mound in the wiring!). Just had a new wiring loom shipped over and need to start rechroming....

Slow but very sure progress. Will upload pics on photobucket asap.

As soon as I can sort my sodding internet connection in my new house I'll upload some piccies. Rear quarter now on, totally rebuilt rear panel, loads of bits ordered from US and a few bits in primer after getting blasted.

Bought new OEM interior kit, including padding, door cards and headliner. Might have to get Mick Frewer on the case....

Iain is too busy with his printing venture to do the chassis wrap, so I'm either going to use Kustom Kolors welder Mr Watts, or might tap up Jon Golding at Homegrown Hot Rods. Looks like I'm buying the engine out of his 32 rod as well for the Impala. Watch this space.

Hope everyone elses projects are coming on strong. I can't wait to hit the road next summer in the 'pala. It's going to be emotional.

Sorry I've not been online for ages (doubt anyone cared!) - moved house and had to wait for the broadband to hook me up.

As I write this I'm watching my garage being built - finally getting a garage big enough for a yank tank, bug and inspection pit.

Took the Impala chassis down to Bournemouth last week. We found out that the front x-member has had a big hit and the whole chassis is actually a bit bent. Bugger. Trying to see if it's mendable or if I can get a spare chassis off a breaker. I do know of RHD '64 Impala convertible being broken...

Body ready for primer!

Pix on their way!
