11 Proven Benefits of Olive Oil There are many disagreements about fats in the diet. However, pretty much everyone agrees that olive oil, especially extra virgin, is good for you. Here are 11 health benefits of olive oil that are supported by scientific research. 1. Olive Oil is Rich in Healthy Monounsaturated Fats Olive oil is the natural oil extracted from olives, the fatty fruit of the olive tree. About 24% of the oil is saturated fats and omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids (1). But the predominant (73%) fatty acid in olive oil is a monounsaturated fat called oleic acid, which is extremely healthy. Oleic acid is believed to help reduce inflammation, and may have beneficial effects on genes linked to cancer . Monounsaturated fats in extra virgin olive oil are also...
Multiple sclerosis is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by autoimmune-mediated demyelination in the CNS resulting in paralysis and cognitive deficits. MS therapies can reduce inflammation and downregulate immune function. Earlier studies have also shown that flavinoids limit demyelination in MS suggesting their potential against neuro-inflammation and related disorders. Preclinical data has shown that polyphenols exhibit potential to block neural inflammation and damage. The potential of polyphenols on limiting demyelination makes them prospective therapeutics in age-related MS and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Polyphenols are the most abundant antioxidants in our diets. The main classes of polyphenols are phenolic acids and flavonoids, which account for one- and two-thi
A new study has proven that an ingredient in extra virgin olive oil can kill cancer cells. The results of the study, which will be published in the journal Molecular and Cellular Oncology, were made public on January 23, 2015. The researchers, nutritional scientist Paul Breslin (Rutgers University), biologist David Foster (Hunter College) and chemist Onica LeGendre (Hunter College) discovered in a lab study that the ingredient, called oleocanthal, causes a rupture of a part of the cancerous cell which releases enzymes and causes cell death, without harming healthy cells. In this way, cancer cells are killed by their own enzymes. “Oleocanthal is a name for a chemical in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) that means ‘Stinging Oil Aldehyde’,” Paul Breslin told Olive Oil Times. “It is made
Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) contains more than 36 phenolic compounds. Although all of the phenolic compounds in EVOO have known beneficial effects, one specific compound in particular, known as oleocanthal, has been discovered to have powerful natural anti-inflammatory benefits. In fact, oleocanthal exhibits the same anti-inflammatory response in the body as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) Ibuprofen, acting down the exact same pathways as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. Oleocanthal has been shown to stop the inflammatory cascade by inhibiting both cyclooxygenase-1 and cyclooxygenase-2 inflammatory enzymes in a dose-dependent manner. Compared to NSAID Ibuprofen, its potency is less, at approximately 10 percent. However, unlike NSAIDs, which have many known side effect...
The Mediterranean diet is the world’s most studied dietary pattern and has been shown to provide valuable health benefits and reduce the risk of numerous diseases. Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is the major source of lipids in the Med Diet and is consumed on a daily basis. EVOO contains powerful phenolic compounds that exert many of these known health benefits, namely hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol and their derivatives. Understanding the chemical identity of the various phenolic compounds is critically important for furthering research and for permitting specific health claims in relation to specific phenolic compounds. However, there is no officially defined method for the measurement of phenolic compounds, particularly in relation to making health claims, something that the European Unio
This is appaling news BUT it does tie in with our experience with Matt’s MS. His consultant is booking people in for visits this time NEXT YEAR. The drugs involved in MS treatment are MASSIVELY expensive and monthly and in Matt's case they do NOT work. This is why we have started Matt on a course of Extreme High Polyphenol level Organic EVOO. The Neurological Alliance has published a report (link is external) into the views of GPs on the initial assessment and referral of people presenting with neurological symptoms. It follows their 2014 survey (link is external) which highlighted major delays in the time taken to diagnose neurological conditions. The majority of people with neurological conditions wait over 12 months between first presenting in primary care and
A long time ago the first vehicle I put hydraulics on was “Max”, a Beetle for my daughter. Max became a show winner and was featured in most magazines and TV shows at the time. Flat4 magazine covered the Air Cooled scene at that time and one John Smith was starting out on his media career with the mag. The first vehicle I fitted out for a customer was a Granada for Jonny. The first kit I supplied was to Nick Farrow for his “FuzzyJuice” Bay window camper. Fast forward to 2016 and Jonny (aka Car Pervert) has built a World record breaking EV, partly sponsored by Gasit (Nick’s most recent and innovative LPG company) with Nick as Crew Chief. WELL DONE GUYS Forget about Tesla Motors or other similar zero-emission vehicles because the world speed record for electric vehicles has j
